The Igorots come from the Cordillera region, in the Philippines island of Luzon; since the World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, was held shortly after the conclusion of the Spanish-American War (1898), which brought the Philippines under U.S. rule, the large Philippine Exhibit was intended to expose fair visitors to the people and resources of the protectorate and to acculturate Filipinos to the U.S. The photograph has been cropped at the right side, and likely the left also (because no stamped number is visible). Stamped on lower right corner: Cop[yrighted 1904] Louisiana [Purchase Exposition Co.].
