Description	Portrait of Bishop H.P. Almon Abbott wearing clerical robes with a cross around his neck and ring on his left hand. Top right of picture is flawed. Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky, resigned his office as a protest against the verdict rendered in the ecclesiastical trial of the Reverend J.A. Velasco, rector of Dayton, Kentucky, who was tried on three charges: violation of a preordination pledge to resign his office if he married a Catholic, conduct unbecoming a clergyman and using defamatory language to his Bishop. Rev. Velasco was found guilty of the last charge only, and the Bishop resigned saying he "could not condone sin".
