Associated
Press
story
included
with the
photograph
, the
cantilever
bridge
cost
$5,000,000
and was
built
with
private
funds
. The
first
person
to
cross
the
bridge
was
supposed
to be
President
Herbert
Hoover
, but the
Secret
Service
crossed
several
days
in
advance
as a
precaution
. The
bridge
was
formally
dedicated
October
31
,
1929
. The
bridge
was
placed
on the
National
Register
of
Historic
Places
in
1984
.
