Lyda Messer Caudill , right , stands outside a log cabin wearing a Scottish plaid dress and accompanied by a girl dressed as a Scottish royal court attendant . They are likely performing in the annual American Folk Song Festival near Ashland , Kentucky . In addition to being a singer of traditional Scottish ballads , Lyda Messer Caudill , said to be a descendant of Mary Queen of Scots , was elected superintendent of Rowan County , Kentucky schools in 1906 and founded the first school for African-American students in the county .
