Description	Lyda Messer Caudill, said to be a descendant of Mary Queen of Scots, poses outdoors in Mary Queen of Scots costume (a long plaid dress with pleated insets and a high collar). She is likely performing in the annual American Folk Song Festival near Ashland, Kentucky. In addition to being a singer of traditional Scottish ballads, Mrs. Caudill was elected superintendent of Rowan County, Kentucky schools in 1906 and founded the first school for African-American students in the county.
