Description
William and Alameda Sparks Messer , an elderly couple wearing work clothes , stand outside a small shed in Rowan County , Kentucky . Mr . Messer , descended from the Stewarts of Scotland , is said to be a descendant of Mary Queen of Scots . Alameda Sparks is his second wife . Mr . Messer's daughter , Lyda Messer Caudill , was elected superintendent of Rowan County , Kentucky schools in 1906 and founded the first school for African-American students in the county .
