Lyda Messer Caudill , said to be a descendant of Mary Queen of Scots , is pictured sitting on the porch of her log cabin in Rowan County , Kentucky . Mrs . Caudill , a teacher , was elected superintendent of Rowan County schools in 1906 and founded the first school for African-American students in the county . She was also a singer of traditional Scottish ballads . Title supplied by cataloger .
