Description
An African-American woman wearing a long dress and head scarf sits at a table on a porch , writing . A portrait of Abraham Lincoln is propped up on the table . In her 1940 book 'The Sun Shines Bright, ' Thomas recalls that Aunt Charity had been hired to clean Thomas ' mother's home in Ashland , Kentucky . Noticing the woman's interest in the portrait of Abraham Lincoln , Thomas taught her how to write his name , then moved the portrait to the back porch to take this photo .
