. This
Egyptian
Revival
style
structure
was
built
as a
combination
Masonic
temple
and
hotel
and was to also
include
a
large
and
elaborately
decorated
theater
. The
theater
was
never
built
and the
building
was
sold
after
only
three
years
,
first
for
use
as a
privately
operated
hotel
and then to a
succession
of
other
users
.
Renovations
done
by
various
owners
have
obscured
much
of the
original
ornate
decoration
and
inscriptions
. The
interior
spaces
of the
Egyptian-revival
temple/hotel
were
immense
, as were the
palaces
and
temples
from
which
it
derived
. This
photograph
shows
the
exterior
of the
Kosair
Building
including
a
mural
of a
desert
scene
, a
pair
of
Egyptian-style
wings
,
depictions
of a
man
and a
woman
over
the
entryways
,
Arabic
writing
, and
smaller
image
depicting
a
sword
,
crescent
and
star
. The
street
scene
includes
numerous
automobiles
and a
neighboring
used
car
dealership
.
