When
it
opened
in
1911
,
Waverly
Hills
Sanatorium
housed
only
eight
patients
. The
design
of the
building
is
in
keeping
with
theories
of the
time
regarding
the
efficacy
of a
rural
setting
and
atmosphere
in the
treatment
of
tuberculosis
.
Common
to
such
structures
at the
time
was an
abundance
of
porches
where
patients
could
breathe
the
fresh
country
air
thought
necessary
to their
cure
.
Ever-increasing
patient
populations
required
expansions
,
usually
attributed
to
other
architects
.
However
, an
undated
annotation
in
one
of
Joseph
&
Joseph's
client
lists
says
"
all
buildings
"
next
to the
name
of the
sanatorium
. The
hospital
closed
in
1961
after
the
development
of
streptomycin
allowed
tuberculosis
patients
to be
treated
on an
outpatient
basis
.
It
then
became
a
nursing
home
and
facility
for the
mentally
retarded
.
Both
later
closed
and the
property
has been
parceled
out
to
developers
. The
building
has been on the
National
Register
of
Historic
Places
since
1983
.
