Title	Atherton Building.

Description	Address: 610 S. Fourth Street (Later known as the Francis Building). Completed in 1907, the Atherton Building would have been a project started while Alfred S. Joseph was still serving as chief architect and engineer for the firm of McDonald & Dodd. The building is an example of the major influence that Joseph & Joseph was to have on the character of what became "downtown" Louisville as it changed from an area of small shops and residences to one dominated by retail and office spaces. The building contained the Mary Anderson Theater, the first of many designed by the Josephs. This photograph shows the building with canopied windows on the first level and numerous signs lettered just above, including: Geo. W. Owens, Rodgers & Krull, Southern Optical Co. Stamped on front: Caufield & Shook / Louisville. Handwritten on back: Atherton Bldg. / 4th & Chestnut SW corner.
