Description
John Graham Simrall was born in Fayette County , Kentucky , in 1840 . He graduated from Centre College at age 17 , ranked second in his class . Too young to read law , his father placed him under the tutorship of Judge George Robertson , of Lexington , who prepared him for the Louisville law school where he graduated with honors in 1861 . He was immediately admitted to the bar and entered into a partnership with Judge William S . Bodley of Louisville . This partnership , Bodley & Simrall , continued until Bodley's death in 1878 , when Simrall took his former partner's son , Temple Bodley , into partnership with him under the name of Simrall & Bodley . In 1882 , he was appointed by Governor Luke P . Blackburn as Vice Chancellor of the Louisville chancery court . In 1884 , he was elected as the first judge of the law and equity court . In 1895 , Simrall was a unsuccessful candidate for the court of appeals . Simrall was a member of the first board of managers of the University of Kentucky (then known as the Agricultural & Mechanical School) and also served on the board of Kentucky State University (then the State Colored Normal School) . He died in 1905 in Anchorage , Kentucky , and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery .
