Description
John S . Jackman was born in 1841 in Carroll County , Kentucky . His education took place in the county of his birth , but was interrupted when he joined the Confederate army , enrolling in the Ninth Kentucky Infantry of the First Kentucky Brigade . He fought at many of the major battles of the war , including Shiloh , Vicksburg , and Chickamauga . Jackman's Civil War diary is considered one of the best of the genre and is still in print . After the war , he settled in Russellville , Kentucky , read law , and was licensed to practice . In 1871 he moved to Louisville , specializing in chancery practice . He served for many years as U.S . Register for Bankruptcy for the Louisville District . He died in 1912 at the Kentucky Confederate Home in Pewee Valley , Kentucky , and was buried in Louisvilles Cave Hill Cemetery .
