Description
James Barbour was born in Danville , Kentucky , in 1820 . He graduated from Center College in 1837 and three years later received a degree in law from Transylvania College . In 1840 he was admitted to the bar and established a thriving practice in Central Kentucky . When John L . Helm became governor in 1850 , he appointed Barbour first auditor of the commonwealth . In 1852 , he took leadership of the Maysville Branch of the Bank of Kentucky . In 1858 , he helped organize the Union Coal & Oil Company of Maysville and he provided both legal and financial leadership in reviving and completing the Maysville & Lexington Railroad and later organized and became president of the Danville & Lexington Railroad . He died in Maysville in 1896 .
