School of Law Senior Bulletin 1982-83 University of Louisville University of Louisville School of Law Senior Bulletin 1982-83 Published by the University of Louisville Placement Office Placement Office Employer Information The University of Louisville School of Law Placement Office serves as a liaison between employers and job applicants. The office provides a clearinghouse service where inquiries from employers are made available to all interested students and graduates. When an employer lists a job opening with the Law School, the Placement Office requests information on the title of the position, a description of duties, salary range, date position is open, minimum requirements of applicants and procedures for applying. In addition, to stimulate interest as well as to attract those most qualified, we ask employers to submit a firm resume, practice profile or similar descriptive information for display to our students. The Placement Office can compile and mail resumes of students and alumni, provide a list of available candidates and coordinate on-campus interviews. We will attempt in every way to facilitate an employer's recruitment process; however, we will not screen applicants nor attempt to influence hiring decisions. Placement Service On-Campus Interviews On-campus interviews are generally held in the fall; however, they can be scheduled at any time during the school year with the exception of vacation and examination periods. Interviews may be scheduled for third year students seeking permanent positions and for first and second year students interested in summer employment. To facilitate scheduling, contact the Placement Officer after April 15 to reserve space for a fall interviewing date, or at least two weeks in advance. A placement request form (see back page) should be submitted to the office. 2 Recruiting Through Correspondence Employers who are unable to interview at the School are invited to call or send announcements of available positions. Employers can request that a notice be posted on the Placement Bulletin Board located in the main lobby whereby employers can elect to have resumes sent directly by the applicants or be collected and forwarded by the Placement Office. Alumni Placement The Placement Office has on file names of University of Louisville Law School Alumni who are presently interested in changing professional affiliation. Resumes from the Active File can be forwarded to employers upon request. The Placement Office also notifies recent graduates and other alumni of current job openings through the Going Places newsletter which is distributed monthly. Employers have found the newsletter useful in meeting their immediate needs. Follow Up The Placement Office requests that employers notify each student of their decision regarding application, and that the Placement Office be notified when hiring has been completed. We welcome your inquiries about these students, encourage you to utilize the placement services, and invite you to visit the University of Louisville School of Law at your earliest convenience. For further information, write or call: Phyllis D. Leibson Placement Officer School of Law University of Louisville Louisville, KY 40292 (502) 588-6368; 588-6358 The University of Louisville School of Law Background The study of law began in Louisville in 1846 when the state legislature chartered the University of Louisville. The former Jefferson School of Law was absorbed by the University of Louisville in 1950. Throughout its 135 year history the students, faculty and alumni of the School of Law have maintained a traditionally prominent role in scholarship and leadership within the legal community. The University of Louisville School of Law is accredited by the Association of American Law Schools, the American Bar Association, and is a member of the National Association for Law Placement. Enrollment There is currently a total enrollment of 472 students in the day and evening divisions. Students representing 80 colleges and 22 states make up the student body. The selectivity of our admissions standards and the demanding requirements for matriculation combine to ensure competence in our graduates. Facilities The School of Law has been in its present location on the Belknap Campus of the University of Louisville since 1939 when it moved from its downtown site. Buried beneath the front portico of this building are the remains of Louis Dembitz Brandeis, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939 and his wife. The original law building, designed by architect Jens Frederick Larson, was supplemented by the construction of a major library addition in 1974 and another addition in 1981. The library of the Law School consists of more than 120,000 volumes which are selected to aid student instruction and to promote research. Nineteen-hundred and eighty-one saw the completion of an expansive classroom and office facility for the School of Law which approximately doubles the physical plant of the law school. This new facility is complemented by a complete renovation and refurbishment of the existing structure. The Law School Campus includes classrooms, seminar halls, an amphitheater, administrative offices, a suite of offices for student organizations, student and faculty lounges, a darkroom and a library that can accommodate over 300 students. Grading System The University of Louisville Law School has maintained rigorous academic standards. These standards are reflected in the grading policy of the school. Our ordinary or "average" grade is a "C." The University of Louisville has maintained high academic standards and there has been very little grade inflation at this school. Because of the rigorous grading standards at the University of Louisville, the grade point average of our students may appear lower than students with less academic achievement at other schools. Prospective employers may, therefore, find it particularly helpful to compare class rank standing of students. Academic Calendar Fall S emes ter, 1982 Classes Start-Aug. 18 Thanksgiving- Nov. 25- 28 Classes End- Nov. 30 Examinations-Dec. 4-17 Spring Semester, 1983 Classes Start-Jan. 10 Mid-term Vacation- Mar. 20- 26 Classes End- April 19 Examinations- April 23-May 6 Commencement- May 15 3 Student Publications and Programs Journal of Family Law The Journal of Family Law is the law review of the University of Louisville School of Law. The contents of the Journal consist of student written comments and case notes, and articles by persons having expertise in family law. The members of the Journal publish four issues per year and have complete editorial control over content. Candidate selection is based upon writing ability and scholastic achieve· ment. The candidacy period lasts approximately one year. During the period the candidates must submit one case note, several "recent cases" and one student note as well as perform tasks such as proofreading and citechecking. Service on the Journal is the highest academic honor available to a law student. The Journal of Law and Education The Journal of Law and Education is published in conjunction with the University of South Carolina Law and Education Center. It is the foremost publication committed exclusively to school law. Under the direction of Professor Laurence W. Knowles, the University of Louisville members of the Journal are responsible for the research, writing and publication of all recent cases in education as well as preparing synopses of recent law review articles in the area. Louisville Law Examiner The Louisville Law E x aminer, a student published newspaper, serves the law school and other members of the legal community as a medium of information and ideas. Under the direction of a student editor-in-chief, staff members, derived from all three classes, actively participate in gathering information, writing articles, and editing copy for the publication which is issued eight times during the year. The Examiner's circulation has increased to 4200 and includes all law school alumni, the student body, various state and local officials, and other law schools. 4 Moot Court Program The purpose of the Moot Court Program is to provide an opportunity for training in the principles of oral and written advocacy, to provide nationwide exposure to second and third year students through participation in competitions, to sponsor and coordinate the Henry Pirtle and Benjamin F. Washer Moot Court competition and to assist in the first year writing program and appellate advocacy program. This program is managed by a Moot Court Board comprised of second and third year students. Students from the second and third year classes also volunteer to serve as mentors and judges for the first year program. Student mentors guide first year students in the research of their appellate briefs and assist them in their preparation for oral arguments. The student judges hear and critique the first year students appellate argument alongside practicing attorneys and faculty members. The School of Law is especially proud of the recent accomplishments of the National Moot Court and Mock Trial teams. In 1980 competition, the National Moot Court team advanced to the semi-final rounds of Region IV with an undefeated record. The Mock Trial teams have reached the finals of the 6th Circuit competition for the past three years. Legal Aid Clinical Internship and Applied Criminal Justice Senior students in good academic standing are eligible to participate in either the Legal Aid Clinical Internship or Applied Criminal Justice programs. These students, under the supervision of a practicing attorney or members of the faculty, assist clients by counseling, investigating, preparing legal documents, and performing all essential preparation for trial. In addition, these students are permited to prosecute or defend cases in the local court due to a special ruling of the Kentucky Supreme Court which sanctions approved clinical programs. Student Organizations Student Bar Association (SBA) The Student Bar Association consists of the entire student body of the law school and serves as a liaison between students and faculty and administrators. The SBA is managed by elected officers and representatives from both the day and evening divisions. Specialized functions are performed by standing and ad hoc committees composed of student volunteers. In addition, members of the SBA serve on various faculty committees. The SBA is a charter member of the American Law Student Association, a national organization sponsored by the American Bar Association. The Honor Council, under aegis of the SBA, enforces the law school's Honor Code. Council members are elected from the second and third year classes. The Honor Council seeks to further the highest standards of legal education and ethical conduct and create a realization by law students that they are carrying on a great professional responsibility. Louisville Law Forum The Louisville Law Forum is an independent student organization, governed by an elected board of directors, which coordinates various existing lecture programs at the law school. The Law Forum brings to the local legal community distinguished scholars, advocates and public figures with an impact on the legal profession. Lectures are scheduled periodically at no charge to the public. Women's Law Caucus The Women's Law Caucus provides a forum for discussion of problems unique to female law students. Membership is extended to all students interested in perserving and advancing women's legal rights. The Caucus holds monthly meetings and participates in regional and national conferences. Black American Law Students Association (BALSA) The Black American Law Students Association seeks to promote academic excellence among black law students and to improve relations in the law school community. Through meetings and workshops, BALSA encourages its members to commit themselves to making the legal profession more responsive to specialized needs of the black community. BALSA also participates in the recruiting of competent black law students and provides assistance to students preparing for law school. International Law Society The International Law Society encourages increased interest in and understanding of international and comparative law. The Society sponsors speakers and other activities toward this end. Membership is open to any student having a desire to learn about international or comparative law. Student Legal Research Group The Student Legal Research Group (SLRG) is an independent organization that provides selected law student the opportunity to research and write legal memoranda on actual questions of law submitted by attorneys of Kentucky and neighboring states. The SLRG provides a valuable resource for attorneys while at the same time providing income and experience for students. Legal Fraternities Three professional legal frat ernities coexist at the law school. Members are actively recruitied from the student body with each fraternity emphasizing the special advantages available to its affiliates. Membership in legal fraternities is conditioned upon invitation, payment of dues and continued good standing as a law student. Academic and social programs vary with each fraternity. 5 • Phi Alpha Delta-The Fred Vinson Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International was chartered in 1935. Delta Theta Phi-The Henry Clay Chapter of Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity was established at the law school in 1948. Sigma Delta Kappa-The Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Delta Kappa Grand National Law Fraternity is the only fraternity designed for law students in the evening division. Honors and A wards Honor Societies Two honor societies reward outstanding academic achievement among students at the law school. Membership in an honor society is bestowed upon deserving students by the deans and faculty of the law school. Brandeis Society-The Brandeis Society honors those students with outstanding records in law school. Each year the society invites a limited number of second and third year students, the top 5 percent and 10 percent respectively, to become Brandeis Scholars on the basis of their academic records. In addition to honoring outstanding scholastic achievements, the society endeavors to serve the law school in order to enhance scholastic excellence. The society is named after Supreme Court Justice Mr. Louis D. Brandeis, whose bequests have considerably enriched the quality of the law school's academic program. The law school has been the custodian of Mr. Brandeis' personal papers since he began donating them in 1936. Phi Kappa Phi-The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and encourages superior scholarship in all academic disciplines and accepts 6 members from all colleges of the university. Law students may be elected but their number must not exceed, for the year, 10 percent of the number of candidates for degrees. The law school's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was installed in 1942. Omicron Delta Kappa A ward The national leadership honor society, issues an award at graduation. The outstanding senior is selected by reason of high scholarship, prominent leadership and service to the University. Book Awards Books Awards are awarded to students each semester for academic achievement in the classroom. Students are eligible for a book award by receiving the highest grade in the class. The awards are provided by nationally recognized law publishers. Dean's List Dean's List distinction is awarded each semester to students who obtain a 3.0 and above grade point average for courses completed that semester. Contributors | University of Louisville. School of Law |
Description | The Senior Bulletin was produced by the School of Law in 1962 and from 1974-1999 (except the 1976-1977 school year). Doubling as a yearbook and a guide for employers, it contains photographs and short biographies of the members of the graduating class. For the school years between 1962-1963 and 1973-1974, student biographies and photographs were included in The Louisville Lawyer student newspaper. Pages and covers that have no text and are not necessary to keep the pagination of the issue correct have been eliminated. |
