Dear Reader:
The University of Louisville School of Law is justifiably proud of this
year's senior class. The qualifications of recent entering classes have in­creased
substantially. We believe that this quality will be reflected in our
graduates.
If you are considering employing additional legal talent, we hope you
will consider a University of Louisville graduate. It is our desire that this
bulletin will serve as an introduction to this year's graduating class. Please

The Purpose of the University of Louisville School of Law
The University of Louisville School of Law commenced operation in
1846 and has continuously sought to provide a high quality of legal educa­tion
for students who plan to enter the legal profession.
The School of Law conceives of law as the only basis upon which a
civilized society can be founded . Furthermore, the legal profession has
always provided the leaders to operate our legal and social machinery.
Lawyers have been planners, counselors, administrators and policy makers
for both business and government. Consequently, if law students are to
take their places in an increasingly complex profession, they must acquire
more than a working knowledge of the present legal system. They must
also develop analytical skills in respect to decisional law and statutes, the
ability effectively to communicate to others their knowledge of the law, a
knowledgeable appreciation of the interrelationship of law and society, and
the ability to use the law as a tool of societal development.
Although the primary purpose of the School of Law is the legal train­ing
of students, there are many varied activities that support this primary
purpose. For example the School of Law encourages scholarly research.
The School of Law publishes the Journal of Family Law which stresses
family law and its related disciplines. There is also a Local Government
Law Center devoted to intensive research on problems of local government
law.
Legal research and trial practice skills are promoted for students who
participate in the Legal Internship Programs. At all times innovative ap­proaches
are employed so that students are given maximum exposure to
the problematic areas of the law.
In supporting its primary purpose the · School of Law is vitally con­cerned
with the legal profession . For instance, it cooperates with the bar
in a carefully planned program of continuing legal education through regul­arly
offered courses and special institutes. It makes its library and other
facilities freely available to lawyers.
The objectives and direction of the School of Law lead to the develop­ment
of a lawyer with the prospective, breadth, and understanding neces­sary
for the assumption of the many responsibilities assigned by society to
the legal profession.
