Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville Graduating Class of 1999 Celebrating over 150 Years of Professional Achievement, Academic Excellence & Public Service Published by the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville This publication was prepared by the University of Louisville and printed with state funds KRS 57.375 10254 1/00 l A MESSAGE TO GRADUATING SENIORS ... In 1946, when British poet laureate John Masefield delivered his famous lectures at the University of Sheffield, he urged his listeners to "stand and shine" and "bring meaning into human affairs." Today, as we celebrate our Class of 1999, every graduating senior is entitled to "stand and shine." You have persevered and prevailed. This is your day. We celebrate your achievement in earning the Juris Doctor degree. The faculty and staff are proud of you. Among your friends and family, this sense of pride is coupled with love, admiration and nostalgia- a feeling that time passes all too quickly and that moments like this must be treasured. Soon you will be lawyers, members of a learned profession. You will find that professionalism means caring about real people and real problems. It means caring about public service and equal justice under law. It means caring about honesty in business, politics, and private life. Lawyers who do not care will discover that no attorney fees are enough to compensate them. Lawyers who do care will receive abundant satisfaction from their legal careers, regardless of financial compensation. Now the future awaits you. For some graduates, the future may seem uncertain; but each of you will find a path to success, just as you did in law school. The faculty, staff, and I are confident that your careers will justify the pride we feel today, and that your work as lawyers truly will "bring meaning into human affairs." Donald L. Burnett, Jr. Dean To the 1999 Graduates: As the graduating class of 1999, you have been a vital part of the Brandeis School of Law - a school that has become smaller in numbers, more collegial in spirit, global in outlook, a better place to learn, with a deepening commitment to public service. It is a law school of which I am sure you will always be proud. You have joined an illustrious group of over 5,000 alumni/ae who have made a difference in the world. The Brandeis School of Law's alumni/ae serve the legal profession, the business community, and allied professions in all fifty states and several foreign countries. The law school's alumni/ae include members of the U.S. Congress, past governors of Kentucky, and numerous judges in the federal and state court systems. Brandeis School alumni/ae are a diverse group ranging in occupation from the past commander of the US Strategic Air Command to the CEO of Churchill Downs to the Executive Director of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. As an alumnus, you will be contacted about a gift to your alma mater. I hope you will give as generously as you can. Your gift, no matter how small, makes a tremendous difference in the lives of Brandeis students. Support for scholarships, great teachers, and new and innovative programs which will train attorneys who will serve real people with real problems are always needed. Above all, I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities for service that your legal education affords you. You are well prepared not only to do well, but to do good. I wish each of you every success. Sincerely, David J. Montanye Director of Development Louis D. Hall Glenda A. Adams Jonathan C. Shaw M. Lori Joseph Armando Sandoval J. Scott Sweeney Craig A. Johnson The Brandeis Vision He gave his books, his papers, his money, his time and- ultimately- his last remains to the law school in his native city. He had a vision for legal education. His name was Louis Demitz Brandeis. Today, the law school believed to be America's fifth oldest in continuous operation is graced by his name. In response to a resolution of the law faculty, the Board of Trustees of the University of Louisville voted on February 24, 1997, to name the school to the "Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville." The school is housed in Wilson W. Wyatt Hall, named for another legendary Kentuckian. Founded in 1846, the school already was in its eighth decade when Justice Brandeis wrote that he envisioned "a law school of distinction" at the University of Louisville. He gave the school his personal library, including many rare texts on early civil and common law; his personal papers, comprising approximately 250,000 items; and his money (even buying light fixtures when the law school was located in a down- 46 town building during the 1920's and '30's). Justice Brandeis also helped raise money from other donors, aided the school in obtaining the papers of John Marshall Harlan (the "great dissenter"), and arranged for the school to receive original briefs filed with the United States Supreme court - a practice the Court still honors. Before his death, he bequeathed much of his residual estate to the University of Louisville, and he asked that his last remains be buried unobtrusively beneath the law school's classical portico. Justice Brandeis took a deep personal interest in the school not only because his roots were in Louisville, but more importantly because the school represented an opportunity to shape his beliefs into a vision for legal education: • He believed that America's federal system empowers the states to become laboratories of innovation in public policy; accordingly, he envisioned law schools undertaking research and service enabling the states to generate new ideas. • He believed that law is shaped significantly by social and economic forces; accordingly, he envisioned law schools promoting interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship (illustrated by his own famous "Brandeis briefs"). • As a believer in government no larger than necessary, and as a nationally renowned business lawyer who represented small enterprises and individual investors, he decried "the curse of bigness"; accordingly, in his model of legal education he envisioned teaching and learning in small classes on a collegial scale. • Finally, as one of America's earliest pro bono lawyers, he believed in public service; accordingly, he envisioned law 47 schools cultivating an ethic of service (now exemplified by the mandatory public service program at the law school bearing his name). In their resolution, members of the law faculty stated, "The legacy of Justice Brandeis has been an historic foundation of the School of Law and is an inspiring charter for its future." The Board of Trustees' action was greeted warmly by living descendants of Justice Brandeis. Frank Brandeis Gilbert, a Washington, D.C. lawyer, described the family as "very moved" and added, "Grandfather would be proud of the law school today." Title | Senior Bulletin 1998-1999 |
Contributors | University of Louisville. School of Law |
Description | The Senior Bulletin was produced by the School of Law in 1962 and from 1974-1999 (except the 1976-1977 school year) and was renamed the Graduating Class Bulletin as of the 1995-1996 school year. Doubling as a yearbook and a guide for employers, it contains photographs and short biographies of the members of the graduating class. For the school years between 1962-1963 and 1973-1974, student biographies and photographs were included in The Louisville Lawyer student newspaper. Pages and covers that have no text and are not necessary to keep the pagination of the issue correct have been eliminated. This is the final year of the Bulletin. |
Searchable Text | Louis D. Frank Brandeis Gilbert, a Washington, D.C. lawyer, described the family as "very moved" and added, "Grandfather would be proud of the law school today."
