Character portrait of actress Blanche Bates leaning on an end table , wearing a wide-brimmed hat festooned with feathers , a white dress , and long white gloves . Born to theatrical parents in Portland , Oregon , on August 25 , 1873 , Bates appeared at Macauley's Theatre four times between 1910 and 1922 . Because her attire in this portrait matches that in Image Number 1980.20.1406 , this may also relate to her performance in "The Fighting Hope " at Macauley's Theatre in January 1910 . She married twice , first to Milton F . Davis and then to George Creel . She died December 25 , 1941 , in San Francisco , California . Inscription on print , right : For Mr . Hamilton - Sincerely , Blanche Bates . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.) . Title supplied by cataloger .
