Description
Character portrait of Helena Modjeska wearing a tam and jacket , possibly costumed for a role as a male . Born October 12 , 1840 in Cracow , Poland , Mme . Modjeska was a leading Polish actress who became even more famous after emigrating to the United States in 1876 and producing the Helena Modjeska Repertory . She married Charles Bozenta Chlapowski , with whom she toured , and also went by the names Helena Modjeska Chlapowski and Countess Bozenta . She appeared at Macauley's Theatre at least eleven times between 1878 and 1906 . Her Macauley's appearance in February 1892 featured four plays : "As You Like It " "Mary Stuart " "Much Ado about Nothing " and "Macbeth. " While in Louisville , a local confectioner named a candy in her honor : the Modjeska is a caramel-covered marshmallow . She died April 9 , 1909 . Inscription on print , upper left : Mrs . Macauley , With kind regards of Helena Modjeska 1892 . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.) . Title supplied by cataloger .
