Title	Gertrude Elliott as Ophelia, circa 1904.

Description	Full-length character portrait of performer Gertrude Elliott in costume for the role of Ophelia in "Hamlet" which she performed at Macauley's Theatre in February 1904. She is kneeling amid strewn flowers, wearing a white robe, with her hair down. This portrait accompanies one of her costar and husband Johnston Forbes-Robertson, in the role of Hamlet (Image Number ULPA 1980.20.1095). Gertrude Elliott also performed at Macauley's Theatre in "The Light That Failed" (February 24, 1904) and "Hamlet" and "Caesar and Cleopatra" in April 1907. Born in Rockland, Maine on December 14, 1874, she took the last name Elliott as her stage name, as had her older sister Maxine Elliott (nee Jessie Dermot). She died in Kent, England, on December 24, 1950. Inscription on mount, lower right: Yours sincerely, Gertrude Elliott. Location of photo studio: Philadelphia (Pa.). Title supplied by cataloger.
