Portrait of performer and writer William H . Gillette seated with chin on left hand , wearing a three-piece suit with tie and pin-striped pants . Born July 24 , 1853 in Hartford , Connecticut , Gillette starred in eight productions at Macauley's theatre between February 1884 and March 1922 , including "Diplomacy " in March 1915 , the likely occasion for the inscription of this portrait . He died in Hartford , Connecticut on April 29 , 1937 . Inscription on mount , lower edge : Dear John Macauley - With affectionate regards . William Gillette . March 16 , 1915 . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.) . Title supplied by cataloger .
