Description
Character portrait of actress and director Ethel Barrymore seated on an elegant divan with a parasol leaned against her lap . She wears a chiffon dress with a flower print , white gloves , black choker , pearl necklace , and a fascinator with plumage . Barrymore was born August 15 , 1879 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Her parents (Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew) , siblings (John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore) , and other relatives (such as uncle John Drew) were also famous performers . The family name was adopted by Ethel's father , whose birth name was Herbert Blythe (Ethel was born Ethel Mae Blythe) . Ethel made her stage debut in New York in 1895 with her uncle John Drew . She appeared in eight productions at Macauley's Theatre between 1899 and 1922 , including "Her Sister " in November 1907 , likely the occasion at which this portrait was inscribed . Ethel married Russell Griswold Colt in 1909 , and had two children , John Drew Colt and Ethel Barrymore Colt , who also acted . She died June 18 , 1959 in Beverly Hills , California .
