Description
Well-known and widely reproduced full-length photogravure character portrait of actor Edwin Forrest in costume for the role of Spartacus in "The Gladiator " with curly hair and sideburns , a mustache , and a small patch of beard on his chin , wearing a plated tunic and Roman sandals . Forrest was born in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania in 1806 , and died on December 12 , 1872 (before Macauley's Theatre opened) . He performed in "The Gladiator " circa 1831 , although this photogravure was produced after his death .
