Description
Three-quarter length character portrait of writer , director , and actor Denman Thompson in costume for the role of Joshua Whitcomb in the self-penned play "The Old Homestead. " Thompson first performed a precursor to this play , entitled "Josh Whitcomb " at Macauley's Theatre in late November 1881 ; by late February 1888 , he has returned with "The Old Homestead " which is reprised seven times between 1890 and 1911 (although Thompson is never listed as its star after 1888) . In this widely reproduced photogravure , Thompson stands in front of a set backdrop featuring a house and trees with his hands behind his back , wearing a hat , glasses , checked jacket , and vest .
