Title	Louis Seelbach, circa 1905.
Description	Portrait of hotelier Louis Seelbach seated in a wooden chair, wearing a jacket, white vest with pocket watch fob, tie with stickpin, and mustache. Born in Rhenish, Bavaria, Germany on April 12, 1852, Louis emigrated to the United States in 1869, finding work in Louisville hotels before opening his own restaurant, then, with brother Otto, a hotel. An elegant new Seelbach Hotel, built to the brothers' specifications at the corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets (now Muhammad Ali Boulevard), near Macauley's Theatre, opened with a grand celebration on May 1, 1905, just in time for that year's Kentucky Derby. The inscription on this portrait indicates that it was associated with that hotel's grand opening. Louis Seelbach died on March 18, 1925, shortly before the demolition of Macauley's Theatre. His hotel, now the Seelbach Hilton, remains standing at 500 Fourth Street, Louisville, Kentucky. Inscription on print, center: Yours truly, Louis Seelbach, May 1, 1905. Title supplied by cataloger.
