Louis
emigrated
to the
United
States
in
1869

finding
work
in
Louisville
hotels
before
opening
his
own
restaurant
, then, with
brother
Otto
, a
hotel
. An
elegant
new
Seelbach
Hotel
,
built
to the
brothers'
specifications
at the
corner
of
Fourth
and
Walnut
Streets
(now
Muhammad
Ali
Boulevard)
,
near
Macauley's
Theatre
,
opened
with a
grand
celebration
on
May
1
,
1905
,
just
in
time
for that
year's
Kentucky
Derby
. The
inscription
on this
portrait
indicates
that
it
was
associated
with that
hotel's
grand
opening
.
Louis
Seelbach
died
on
March
18
,
1925
,
shortly
before
the
demolition
of
Macauley's
Theatre
. His
hotel
,
now
the
Seelbach
Hilton
,
remains
standing
at
500
Fourth
Street
,
Louisville
,
Kentucky
.
