Description	Full-length character portrait of performer, producer, and arranger Joseph Jefferson III in costume for the role of Bob Acres in "The Rivals." He stands before an outdoor backdrop, wearing a tri-corner hat, jacket with tails, and pants tucked into knee-high boots, and holding a gun in the crook of his left arm and another in his right hand. Jefferson was born in 1829 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died April 23, 1905 in Palm Beach, Florida. His father and grandfather, both also named Joseph Jefferson, were stage actors as well, as were his sons, Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Jefferson, and William Jefferson. Joseph Jefferson III appeared at Macauley's Theatre thirty-four times beginning in 1880. He starred as Bob Acres in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The Rivals" in December 1889; October 1881; December 1882; December 1883; December 1891; and April 1900.
