Three-quarter length character portrait of Christie McDonald Jefferson seated , wearing an oversize hat and elaborate off-the-shoulder dress . An equally elaborate cape is draped behind her on the chair . Canadian actress Christie McDonald was born February 28 , 1875 in Nova Scotia . She appeared at Macauley's Theatre opposite Frank Daniels in "Hook of Holland " in March 1890 ; in "The Rounders " in January 1900 , billed under her maiden name ; and in "The Spring Maid " in November 1912 . She was married to William W . Jefferson at the time of this photograph , and later married Henry L . Gillespie . She died in Fairfield , Connecticut on July 25 , 1962 .
