Character portrait of actor/producer E . S . (Edward Smith) Willard seated at a desk on a stage set surrounded by props , wearing a three-piece suit with ascot and spats . He appeared at Macauley's Theatre eleven times between 1898 and 1902 , including twice as the lead role in "Tom Pinch " (a play based on Charles Dickens ' "Martin Chuzzelwit") , possibly the role represented by this costume . Born in England in 1853 , Willard led the Edward Smith Willard Repertory in the early years of the 20th century , and died in 1915 . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.) .
