Three-quarter length character portrait of performer Lillian Russell in costume for the title role in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "Patience. " She wears a bonnet and long dress and carries an empty pail under her left arm . Born Helen Louise Leonard in Clinton , Iowa ca. 1861 , she took the stage name Lillian Russell , and starred in eight productions at Macauley's Theatre between February 1895 and October 1910 . She died June 6 , 1922 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.)
