Description
Color
lithograph
advertising
Emerson's
Megatherian
Minstrels
,
which
featured
performer
Billy
Emerson
(pictured
here)
.
Billy
Emerson
(Edmund)
was
born
in
Belfast
,
Ireland
in
1846
and
died
in
Boston
,
Massachusetts
, in
1902
.
Emerson's
Megatherian
Minstrels
were
managed
by
Richard
M
.
Hooley
,
referenced
a
giant
prehistoric
sloth
in their
name
,
opened
at
Hooley's
in
Chicago
for
one
season
only
in
June
1879
, and
specialized
in
minstrel
shows
.
Such
variety
acts
featuring
comic
skits
,
music
, and
dancing
,
often
performed
by
white
people
in
blackface
, were
common
in
nineteenth
century
America
. This
image
depicts
African
Americans
in a
stereotyped
fashion
that
may
be
offensive
to
many
viewers
; the
University
of
Louisville
does
not
endorse
the
content
of, or
expression
carried
by, these
images
.
However
, these
images
do
present
the
attitudes
and
assumptions
of
some
people
of the
period
in
which
they were
produced
. The
cultural
record
would be
incomplete
--
and
we
would not be
honest
with
ourselves
and
our
past
--
if these
images
were
omitted
.
