Description
Full-length character portrait of Mme . Helena Modjeska costumed as a man , wearing a hat , tunic , leggings , and boots and posing with large spear . The annotation indicates that she is performing the role of Rosalind in the Shakespearean comedy "As You Like It " in which Rosalind disguises herself as a boy named "Ganymede. " Mme . Helena Modjeska , born October 12 , 1840 in Cracow , Poland , was a leading Polish actress who became even more famous after emigrating to the United States in 1876 and producing the Helena Modjeska Repertory . She married Charles Bozenta Chlapowski , with whom she toured , and also went by the names Helena Modjeska Chlapowski and Countess Bozenta . She appeared at Macauley's Theatre at least eleven times between 1878 and 1906 , performing "As You Like It " at six of those appearances , between 1883 and 1892 . While in Louisville , a local confectioner named a candy in her honor : the Modjeska is a caramel-covered marshmallow . She died April 9 , 1909 . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.)
