Description	Autographed three-quarter length character portrait of Maxine Elliott with her hair down, wearing a white cotton tunic. Actress, producer, and theatre owner Maxine Elliott was born Jessie Dermot in Rockland, Maine on February 5, 1868. She debuted on stage in 1890, taking the stage name Maxine Elliott. She married and divorced two husbands, one of whom was fellow actor Nat C. Goodwin (whose name she sometimes used off-stage). She starred in nine productions at Macauley's Theatre between March 1897 and January 1907, including "An American Citizen" in March 1897, the likely occasion for the inscription on this portrait. She retired from the stage in 1920, and died March 5, 1940, in Juan les Pins, France. Location of photo studio: San Francisco (Calif.)
