Full-length character portrait of performer and writer Frank Mayo in costume for the role of D'Artagnan in "The Royal Guard. " He stands beside a chair in front of a backdrop of interior walls , holding a hat and wearing long hair , a mustache , and a long velvet jacket with leggings , high boots , and a sword . Frank Mayo performed in ten productions at Macauley's Theatre between December 1874 and March 1891 , including "The Royal Guard " in 1888 and seven performances in "Davy Crockett , or Be Sure You're Right , Then Go Ahead. " Inscription on mount , lower center : "Is that the king " - Always yours dear John . Frank Mayo . Location of photo studio : Oakland (Calif.)
