Three-quarter length character portrait of Maxine Elliott seated on a bench before an outdoor backdrop , wearing a hat with flowers and dress with puffy sleeves . Actress , producer , and theatre owner Maxine Elliott was born Jessie Dermot in Rockland , Maine on February 5 , 1868 . She debuted on stage in 1890 , taking the stage name Maxine Elliott . She married and divorced two husbands , one of whom was fellow actor Nat C . Goodwin (whose name she sometimes used off-stage) . The likely occasion for the inscription of this portrait was her performance in "An American Citizen " at Macauley's Theatre in March 1897 . She starred in nine productions at Macauley's Theatre between March 1897 and January 1907 , retired from the stage in 1920 , and died March 5 , 1940 , in Juan les Pins , France . Inscription on print , lower center : Yours sincerely Maxine Elliott 1897 . Location of photo studio : San Francisco (Calif.) . Title supplied by cataloger .
