Title	Elaine, lily maid of Astolat.
Creator	Matthews, Kate, 1870-1956 (photographer)
Description	Mary Johnston as Elaine and a boatman in a reenactment of Tennyson's poem, "Lily Maid of Astolat." A handwritten inscription by someone other than the photographer says that the boatman is Kate Matthews, but an article in "The Louisville Courier-Journal" on November 12, 1942 indicated that the boatman was Bert Gatchel. In "The Little Colonel, Maid of Honor" (1906), author Annie Fellows Johnston describes a similar tableau with Lloyd Sherman as Elaine and Malcolm McIntyre as the boatman. Photographer Kate Matthews' signature is on lower right corner of mount. Also handwritten on mount in a handwriting believed to be that of the photographer's niece, Lillian Fletcher Brackett: "Mary Johnston as Elaine; Kate Matthews as _____." Title supplied by cataloger.
