Description	An African-American woman in servant's dress and head scarf sits in a wooden chair reading a newspaper. The woman, Rebecca Porter, was born a slave in Virginia. After the war, she spent most of her life working in Pewee Valley, Kentucky. Rebecca was the real-life model for the character Mom Beck in the Little Colonel series of books written by Annie Fellows Johnston. Signed in lower right corner by the photographer: "Kate Matthews, 1904".
