An African-American woman in servant's dress and head scarf sits in a wooden chair reading a newspaper . The woman , Rebecca Porter , was born a slave in Virginia . After the war , she spent most of her life working in Pewee Valley , Kentucky . Rebecca was the real-life model for the character Mom Beck in the Little Colonel series of books written by Annie Fellows Johnston . Signed in lower right corner by the photographer : "Kate Matthews , 1904 ".
