Description	A girl with long curly hair, wearing a plaid dress and white pinafore, sits in a large wooden chair. She holds a book in her left hand and is looking up as if daydreaming. Her feet and the chair rest on a bearskin rug. Annie Fellows Johnston's based the physical attributes of the character Betty in her Little Colonel books on this girl, whose real name was Elizabeth Matthews. Elizabeth was also a niece of the photographer, Kate Matthews. Handwritten on verso in Kate Matthews' handwriting: "Betty Matthews as 'Betty Lewis'", "The Little Colonel Books", and "'Betty' of Yesterday".
