Description
Title
Manuscript
,
blank
leaf
,
15th
century
,
fragment
.
Description
A
fifteenth
century
scribe
prepared
this
blank
leaf
made
of
animal
skin
by
marking
19
straight
lines
before
writing
a
text
.
Animal
skin
was
still
being
used
for
many
books
during
this
time
,
although
paper
was
known
in
Europe
by the
fourteenth
century
. This
particular
vellum
leaf
is
ruled
in
ink
, but
lead
, and
sometimes
silver
, also were
used
for
rules
. To
create
the
pattern
for an
evenly
spaced
block
of
text
, a
scribe
lined
the
top
leaf
in a
pile
of
unwritten
leaves
, and then
pricked
the
dimensions
in the
outermost
margins
. With
each
new
leaf
in the
pile
, the
scribe
connected
the
prickings
in
order
to
replicate
the
line
measurements
.
Sometimes
a
scribe
used
a
series
of
points
,
bound
together
as a
rastrum
or
rake
, to
rule
several
lines
with
one
stroke
.
Before
the
leaves
could
be
ruled
or
written
upon
, they had to be
prepared
from
animal
skins
,
most
often
those of
sheep
.
Skins
were
scraped
,
washed
and
whitened
in
sunlight
or with
chalk
, then
stretched
before
being
cut
and
folded
into
leaves
.
