Portrait of John Pope (1822-1892) , a career Army officer and Union major general in the United States Civil War . He was born in Louisville , Kentucky , the son of Nathaniel Pope , a prominent Federal judge in early Illinois Territory and a friend of lawyer Abraham Lincoln . He was the brother-in-law of Manning Force and second cousin-in-law of Mary Todd Lincoln . At the outbreak of the Civil War , Pope was one of four officers selected to escort the president-elect Lincoln to Washington , D.C .
