Description
Portrait of Edward Wellman Serrell (b . 1826) , a civil and military engineer and Union general (brevet brigadier general) in the United States Civil War . Prior to the war he accompanied the 1848 expedition that laid out the railroad route across Panama . He built several suspension bridges . In 1887 he became president and consulting engineer of New York's Washington County railroad .
