Portrait of Brigadier General Adelbert Ames (1835-1933) , a sailor , soldier , and politician . He served with distinction as a Union Army brigadier general during the United States Civil War . He was brevetted major general and received a Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at the First Battle of Bull Run . Postwar he was Provisional Governor of Mississippi (1868-1869) , U.S . Senator from Mississippi (1870-1874) and Governor of Mississippi (1875) .
