Poe
became
a
Colonel
of this
unit
in
September
1861
.
Poe
later
served
as
General
Sherman's
chief
engineer
,
overseeing
the
burning
of
Atlanta
.
After
the
war
in
1870
Poe
was
responsible
for
much
of the
early
lighthouse
construction
on the
Great
Lakes
. The
design
and
implementation
of the
first
Poe
Lock
was
instrumental
in
making
possible
the
shipping
industry
which
was
pivotal
to the
creation
of the
basic
steel
industry
in the
United
States
.
