Description
The making of batiks is a big home industry , in Java , involving a yearly turnover of more than $40,000,000 . The principal centers for the batik industry are Djokjakarta , Solo , Djakarta , Surabaya , and Pekalongan . Before the war , batiks were exported to various foreign countries , including India and Ceylon . However today there are not enough batiks made to fulfill the demand of Indonesia itself , and it will probably be another two or three years before the Javanese batiks can again be found in foreign markets . Here are finished batiks being folded and wrapped in the shop of a batik dealer . They will then be sold at local markets , or transported to other islands throughout the Indonesian archipelago .
