Logging operations in the Ponchatoula cypress swamp for the Louisiana Cypress Lumber Company . This is one of the last a large scale logging operations of the practically extinct red swamp cypress . The cut out cypress swamp . The red swamp cypress is a slow growing tree that needs centuries to mature to usable lumber , and requires special conditions to sprout . A cypress swamp , once cut down , will never grow again . This is valuable tree is nearly extinct .
