Part

Bridge
over
the
Kentucky
River
. The
metal
railroad
bridge
spans
the
scene
, with its
stone
piers
visible
at the
far
left
.
Several
structures
are
visible
on the
river
banks
below
the
bridge
, and the
striations
in the
stone
sides
of the
river
banks
are also
apparent
. The
sky
under
the
bridge
is
orange
,
giving
the
impression
of
twilight
. This
is
most
likely
the
1911
,
steel
version
of the
bridge
,
designed
by
Gustav
Lindenthal
. The "
new
"
High
Bridge
was
built
around
the
earlier
,
iron
bridge
,
which
was
built
in
1877
. The
legend
on the
verso
reads
, "The
highest
bridge
spanning
a
navigable
stream
on the
American
continent
. The
most
massive
structure
of its
length
and
breadth
known
to the
civilized
world
.
