One
relatively
large
monument
is
visible
on the
left
hand
side
;
many
smaller
headstones
are
visible
in the
center
,
farther
off
. There are
many
trees
and
other
plants
.
Description
on the
back
reads
, "
Chalmette
Cemetery
was
purchased
by the
United
States
Goverment
[sic]
in
1864
for
use
as a
burial
place
of
soldiers
killed
in the
War
between
the
States
. The
grounds
are
laid
out
in a
manner
appropriate
to the
uses
[sic]
.
It
is
here that
thousands
of
white
marble
headstones
mark
the
last
resting
place
of
soldiers
fallen
in
battle
. The
total
number
is
12,273
, of
which
6,789
are
known
, and
5,484
are
marked
'Unknown.'
"
