Title	Stern necessity.
Description	African American woman sews up a patch on a young boys pants as he lays across her lap. The facial expressions are stereotypical portrayals of blacks in the early 20th century. This image depicts African Americans in a stereotyped fashion that may be offensive to many viewers; the University of Louisville and the University Archives & Records Center does not endorse the content of, or expression carried by, these images. However, these images do present the attitudes and assumptions of some people of the period in which they were produced. The cultural record would be incomplete -- and we would not be honest with ourselves and our past -- if these images were omitted. The "A" in the inscription, "A stern necessity" wraps around a spool of thread. The image is signed "A. Clark" and copyright is claimed by the Ullman Manufacturing Company. Published by the American Post Card company, "Kute Koon Kids" series 165, subject 2918. Postmarked 1911 on verso.
