, "This
steamship
is
the
principal
vessel
of the
White
Star
fleet
,
being
one
of the
largest
boats
in the
world
,
is
710
feet
long
,
75-1/2
feet
beam
,
speed
17-1/2
knots
.
It
was
launched
in
1903
and
is
engaged
in the
Transatlantic
service
between
Liverpool
and
New
York
. The
Baltic
on
January
23
,
1909
,
received
a
wireless
message
from the
Republic
calling
for
help
as
it
had
collided
with
another
steamer
during
a
fog
and was
gradually
sinking
with
about
800
passengers
on
board
. The
Baltic
went
to the
rescue
, and
within
a
very
few
hours
had
all
the
passengers
transferred
from the
Republic
without
the
loss
of a
single
life
.
Within
a
short
time
after
the
last
passenger
was
transferred
the
Republic
sank
beneath
the
waves.
