It
is
set
on a
small
hill
, with
steps
leading
up
to the
building
. There are
people
near
the
monument
;
one
person
is
on a
bicycle
.

reads

Grant's
Tomb

Riverside
Park
,
New
York
.
General
Grant
died
on
Mount
McGregor
,
N.Y
., on
July
23
,
1885
. The
construction
of a
magnificent
mausoleum
for his
remains
was
begun
in
Riverside
Park
on
April
27th
,
1891
, and
it
was
dedicated
on
April
27th
,
1897
, in the
presence
of
one
of the
greatest
concourses
of
people
and with
one
of the
greatest
parades
ever
witnessed
in the
United
States
. The
mausoleum
exclusive
of
steps
and
portico
projections
is
about
100
feet
square
, the
base
and
height
160
feet
from the
ground
and
nearly
300
feet
from the
level
of the
Hudson
River
. There
is
an
outer
gallery
130
feet
above
the
base
from
which
the
country
may
be
seen
for
miles
around.
